Preserving an Ancient Arctic Herding Heritage
At NorthStar, our dedication to preserving rare Arctic breeds has expanded to include the remarkable Nenets Herding Laika — a truly ancient working spitz whose roots trace back thousands of years with the Nenets people of Northern Russia. These hardy, intelligent, and loyal dogs were bred to herd and guard reindeer across the tundra, living and working alongside their people in some of the most unforgiving climates on earth.
Today, they remain one of the most authentic living links to early Arctic dog culture — a vital foundation for many of the modern northern breeds.
Continuing the Legacy at NorthStar
NorthStar imported the first pedigreed Nenets Herding Laika to the United States in 2021, opening the door for this remarkable and little-known Arctic breed to begin establishing a foothold here. However, the primary preservation and importation work that followed has been done by our friends and collaborators at Mystic Winds Kennel, who have been deeply dedicated to the breed’s development and awareness in North America.
When Mystic Winds stepped down from breeding, we felt it was important to continue the work they began. With their blessing and guidance, NorthStar has stepped forward to help keep the Nenets Herding Laika bloodlines alive in North America.
Our goal is not simply to produce puppies — but to preserve the breed’s heritage, strengthen its genetic diversity, and help ensure this rare Arctic herding dog can gain the recognition and stability it deserves in the United States.
We are currently home to some of the foundation dogs representing the Nenets Herding Laika in the U.S., carefully selected for temperament, health, and type true to their origins.
A Rare Working Heritage
Unlike many northern breeds bred primarily for sledding, the Nenets Herding Laika was developed as a true herding dog. They work quietly and intelligently, using natural instinct and eye contact rather than barking to move reindeer — a behavior that translates beautifully to livestock and companion homes alike.
Their loyal, adaptable, and affectionate temperament makes them an extraordinary partner for experienced owners who appreciate primitive breeds and their deep bond with their people.
Registry Status
At this time, Nenets Herding Laikas in the U.S. are registered through the American Stock Dog Registry (ASDR).
Unfortunately, the AKC Foundation Stock Service is not currently accepting new breeds from the Russian Kennel Federation (RKF), which includes the Nenets Herding Laika. Despite these challenges, we remain committed to building a sustainable, verifiable record of pedigrees and health data through ASDR and to advocating for the breed’s recognition in the future.
Looking for New Breed Enthusiasts
We are actively looking for individuals who want to be part of establishing and growing the Nenets Herding Laika population in the United States. Whether you are a preservation breeder, experienced handler, or passionate owner interested in helping this ancient herding breed gain a foothold here, we would love to connect.
Because of the breed’s rarity and our focus on maintaining a responsible preservation program, Nenets Herding Laika puppy availability will be very limited. If you know you would like to add a Nenets Herding Laika to your family in the future, we strongly encourage you to join our waiting list early to be considered for upcoming litters.
Together, we can ensure the Nenets Herding Laika’s story continues — not just in history books, but in future generations.
