Partnering with Potential
At NorthStar, we’ve been actively involved with the dog world for a very long time and the Yakutian Laika breed specifically since 2019, and we’re proud to be one of the foundation kennels helping to establish this remarkable breed in the United States. While we are no longer involved with the Carolina Dog, many of the bloodlines we helped develop in that breed continue to win top honors in the show ring today. The same is true for the Norwegian Lundehund—some of the top-winning dogs in the country trace back to imports and lines we helped bring into the U.S. With a strong history of success in rare breeds, we’ve been placing quality puppies in dedicated show homes for over a decade—helping new exhibitors and future breeders get their start with the right dogs and the right support. In fact, within the Yakutian Laika breed, well over half of the dogs currently competing in the U.S. show ring trace back to NorthStar progeny and imports, reflecting NorthStar’s long-term commitment to building a strong and diverse foundation for the breed and bringing in new exhibitors in America.
While we do offer certain bloodlines of our Siberian Huskies as show potential, this is a highly established and competitive breed, so we encourage a thorough conversation with anyone interested in showing Siberians to determine whether we’re the right fit—or if another kennel with a singular focus on the breed may better suit their goals.
Many kennels across the country started with NorthStar dogs, and we continue to support those who are genuinely committed to the well-being and future of their dogs and the breed. We take pride in producing dogs that not only excel in the ring but thrive in the hands of breeders and exhibitors who value soundness, temperament, and long-term vision.
As with any long-standing breeding program, we've experienced the full spectrum of human nature. While we are grateful for the many partnerships built on trust and mutual respect, there are times when support is met with disregard or even disrespect. Still, we choose to move forward— because we believe in continuing to invest in others. Every breed needs fresh passion and perspective, and we remain committed to helping good people get started on the right foot.
The Yakutian Laika is still an emerging breed in the U.S., and its future depends on the involvement of passionate, ethical, and responsible owners, exhibitors, and breeders. We are always happy to work with those who are ready to learn, show with integrity, and contribute meaningfully to the breed’s continued development.
We also invite you to join the Dog, Show, and Sport Fanciers New Exhibitor Assistance Group—a welcoming, inclusive space for new exhibitors of all breeds and disciplines. While it isn’t an overly active group that will flood you with messages, it’s a valuable place to connect, ask questions, and get clear, honest answers from people with real experience in the sport.
